Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, highlighted the importance of collective participation in fostering unity and racial harmony in Guyana during her address at the 58th Independence Anniversary Flag Raising Ceremony in Mahdia Township, Region Eight. She emphasized that building a strong nation requires everyone’s involvement and support.

Minister Sukhai pointed out that unity was evident during the border controversy with Venezuela, demonstrating the country’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty. She reiterated that every citizen has a role in the nation’s development.

She also noted that Guyana has transformed from its early days of independence to a modern country with one of the fastest-growing economies. This growth has led to numerous employment and economic opportunities. However, she stressed the need for individuals to enhance their academic qualifications to fully benefit from these prospects.

Minister Sukhai mentioned the ongoing construction of the US$7.2 million Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute in Port Mourant, which aims to provide world-class hospitality training as part of the government’s efforts to develop a top-tier tourism sector. She encouraged the private sector to seize these new opportunities.

Focusing on Amerindian welfare, she affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting indigenous communities through significant funding initiatives like the Carbon Credit program and the Amerindian Development Fund.

The independence celebrations included the hoisting of the Golden Arrow Head flag in all regions and the attendance of several government ministers. The National Flag Raising Ceremony was also held in Linden, Region 10, after being hosted in Regions Two and Nine in the previous two years.
